RECOSI launches Bettercoal Desktop Assessment Process

Published on 10 June 2026

London, United Kingdom – Today, the Responsible Commodities Sourcing Initiative (RECOSI) which operates the Bettercoal Programme launched the Bettercoal Desktop Assessment Process.

The Bettercoal Programme, launched in 2012, promotes the continuous improvement in the mining and sourcing of coal.

It developed the Bettercoal Code, an international recognised standard for the coal industry, with 144 provisions, under 12 principles, embedded within the framework of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). The Code is independently assured, and the assessor builds the tailored Continual Improvement Plans (CIP).

The Bettercoal Desktop Assessment Process was developed as a recognised, constructive checkpoint for producers. It is a new entry point for producers to provide earlier identification of Environmental, Social and Governance risks and opportunities for improvement, strengthening alignment with the Bettercoal Code 2.0 and creating earlier value for both members and producers through a staged Continuous Improvement Plan. This process is verified by a Bettercoal Assessor.

Participation under this option does not automatically lead to a site assessment, although progression to a site assessment is encouraged.

Katie Warrick, Executive Director, RECOSI says: “We are pleased to launch the new Bettercoal Desktop Assessment Process and believe that it provides a valuable opportunity for an earlier review of a company’s policies, procedures, and areas requiring improvement, while also offering a clear framework through which these improvements can be implemented.

This new process also creates a more cost-effective entry point to Bettercoal, giving producers the opportunity to better understand their current position before potentially progressing to a site assessment. In turn, this helps reduce upfront resource and cost demands.

We hope that this new process will act as an effective engagement tool, encouraging companies to take part, strengthen their practices, and take proactive steps towards continuous improvement.”
