Working towards a global, responsible coal supply chain

Bettercoal, launched in 2012, is an internationally recognised programme for the coal industry that promotes the continuous improvement in the mining and sourcing of coal. Since 2024, Bettercoal is part of the Responsible Commodities Sourcing Initiative (RECOSI).

The Bettercoal Programme is built on the Bettercoal Code, which is an internationally recognised standard for assessing coal producers against 144 provisions, under 12 principles, embedded within the framework of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance).

There are two ways for coal producers to participate in the Bettercoal Programme: Bettercoal Site Assessment and Bettercoal Desktop Assessment.
